Applying decorative laminate is not complicated, but the result depends on a few small habits: a clean board, patient glue timing and a careful trim. This guide walks through the process the way a good carpenter does it, so you can brief your team or try a small project yourself.
Bring the laminate into the room where it will be used and let it rest flat for a day or two. This lets it adjust to the temperature and humidity, and it makes warping much less likely after fitting.
The board should be flat, clean and dry. Sand away any rough spots, dust it off well and wipe away grease. Any bump or speck of dust under the laminate will eventually show on the surface, especially on glossy and dark finishes.
Cut each sheet about 3 to 5 mm larger than the board on every side. You will trim the extra away at the end, which gives you a clean, flush edge instead of a short one. Always cut with the decorative face up when using a fine-toothed saw, and support the sheet so it does not flex.
Spread an even coat of adhesive on both the board and the back of the laminate. Follow the instructions on your adhesive for drying time, because contact adhesive needs to dry until it is just tacky before the two surfaces meet. Work in a ventilated space.
Once the laminate is in position, press it firmly with a roller. Start at the centre and work outwards to push out any trapped air. Go over the whole surface, and give the edges extra attention.
Use a router with a flush trim bit to remove the overhang. Then run a fine file lightly along the edge at a slight angle to take off the sharp corner. File in one direction only, and avoid scratching the face of the sheet.
A board with laminate on only one side can bend over time. Apply a balancing backer sheet on the reverse so both sides pull equally. This is especially important for wardrobe shutters, doors and large panels.
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and a mild detergent. Avoid abrasive scrubbers, which can dull the finish over time, and keep very hot pans off the surface.
Always check the product sheet and your adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for the exact thickness, pressing and drying details. If you are not sure which laminate suits your project, our team is happy to help.
